As our first official assignment, we've been given the task of creating a short film for the 2015 DepicT competition. Individually, we came up with ideas and then combined them all to create our idea for our product.
My initial idea was a Western take on a modern situation, with a faint Sepia tone and mismatched sound effects, like replacing the sound of a car with the sound of horses cantering, and extreme close-ups to emphasize action points. This idea is similar to Baz Lurman's "Romeo & Juliet", and would be interesting to see spliced with a real-life situation.
Connor's idea was a fast-paced action, with many stunts and explosions, all based around a drug deal gone wrong. It would have had fast paced editting, saturated colours and swift camera movements. In a "Bad Boys" style, it wouldn't be 100% serious and super-high octane.
Dean's idea was a comedy Question & Answer mockumentary, where he would go around the college and ask the students awkward and silly questions, much in the style of Sacha Baron Cohen or many YouTube content creators. This would have naturalistic camera movements and possible subtitling and name captions.
We brought all our ideas together to come up with a modernised action/western/comedy, set in a bustling cafe, where two characters want to purchase the last coffee. This will be made dramatic by shooting as though in a western. For example, there will be tense moments of pause, extreme close-ups of eyes and, as a replacement for guns, they draw wallets instead, to keep it natural and add a comedic vibe. We decided on it being over-saturated, like an action flick and utilise quick, sharp edits to make the monotonous and mediocre situation seem extravagant and larger than life.
